About this deal

The premise here is that Claire is a thirty-something down-on-her-luck (aren't we all (no we're not, but a lot of us are! And so she, Sophie, Basher (an excop) and Alex set about on a wild goose chase to unravel the mystery. This crime-solving group of friends gave me a bit of a diverse Scooby Doo gang vibe without Scooby, and I enjoyed the story taking place among the characters along with the actual mystery portion. Andrea Mara An addictive, hilarious, rollicking debut - fresh, original and utterly brilliant, Alice Bell is a real talent to watch.

When the pair arrive at The Cloisters it's clear this family is hiding more than just the good china, as Claire realizes someone has recently met an untimely end at the house. Recently I have read a few murder mysteries with psychics and mediums as the protagonists and I felt that ‘Grave Expectations’ was done well.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. If you're looking for a fun new take on the classic country house/dinner party murder trope, this is for you! Arriving at The Cloisters, Claire and Sophie discover an unquiet spirit, who had met a recent untimely end but is unable to communicate. A funny, distinctive, constantly clever genre-bending supernatural crime novel' ― Bookseller --This text refers to the paperback edition. As Claire desperately tries to keep a lid on the shameful secret that would definitely alienate her new friends, the gang must race against their own incompetence to find the murderer before the murderer finds them.

An addictive, hilarious, rollicking debut - fresh, original and utterly brilliant, Alice Bell is a real talent to watch. In fact, Sophie rarely leaves Claire's side, because she's been haunting her ever since she was murdered at the age of 17. I have written before about how I can never quite put my finger on what makes something with paranormal or supernatural elements work for for me and what doesn’t, but from the fact that I’ve picked this you’ve probably worked out that this one worked!Teaming up with the least unbearable members of the Wellington-Forge family - depressive ex-cop Basher and teenage radical Alex - Claire and Sophie determine to figure out not just whodunnit, but who they killed, why and when. Perfect for fans of BBC's Ghosts, Alice Bell has a keen eye for characterisation and the ridiculous, creating a story that will both send chills down your spine and wrap you up in a hug .

Thank you the author Alice, Atlantic Books and NetGalley for the ARC, this review is my personal, unbiased opinion. Grave Expectations by Alice Bell is a really fun paranormal crime fiction debut that kept me interested in both the characters and what would happen. This could be just up your alley if you enjoy the idea of a contemporary take on the country home murder. I did try and struggle on with it but by chapter 16 I just skipped to the penultimate chapter to find out who done it. Immensely enjoyable, relentlessly mickey-taking murder mystery with a Randall and Hopkirk Deceased vibe: our incredibly amateur sleuth is also an amateur medium, albeit one who can actually see and speak to dead people, because she's had her murdered best friend at her side since they were 17.Add to this a truly dysfunctional family with some of the most entertaining ‘love to hate them’ characters I have read and you have a real page turner. The mystery itself is rather thin, there's not a great deal of actual detecting even though Claire is a self-confessed crime show addict.

After spending several years in London, Alice now lives in Cork in Ireland, where she watches giant ships, makes crochet animals, and plays video games where you can set things on fire and make elves kiss. Along with adolescent conservative Alex and depressed ex-cop Basher, the Wellington-Forge family’s least objectionable members, Claire and Sophie are determined to discover not just a whodunit but also who was killed, why they were killed, and when.Despite this traumatic past, Claire and Sophie are still unprepared for what they encounter when they arrive: a ghost, tragic and unrecognizable, and clearly the spirit of someone killed in a rage at the previous year's party.
